Muse FAQs

How much do the school programs cost?

There is no charge for this program.  However, schools/educators are required to provide transportation to and from campus, and to ensure that Discovery Kits are returned on time to the University of Alberta Museums offices.

Have Muse programs been updated to meet curriculum changes?

The Muse programs began an extensive revision in 2009 to ensure links to the Alberta Education curriculum, which is ongoing. For further information, contact Stephanie Nemcsok, Museum Education Coordinator, at 780.492.9700.

How long are the on-campus programs?

All programs are a full 2.5 hours in length.

Why can’t I bring more than 30 students?

Due to the hands-on nature of the activities and the space available in the collection areas, we can accommodate a maximum of 30 students per booking.

As a home school educator, how can I benefit from Muse?

There is a 12 student minimum to book a Muse program. As a result, speak to other home school educators in your community and see if you can coordinate a visit and book the program together. Lesson plans from the Discovery Kits are online, which you can download and use at home. Some U of A Museums also have regular public hours, visit Our Museum Collections for more information.

Can I bring one class in the morning and another class in the afternoon?

Due to limited resources for interpretation, we currently offer one program per day (mornings only).

Can I borrow a Discovery Kit without participating in the on-campus program?

The Discovery Kit is an extension of the key concepts and skills developed during the on-site program. We do not currently loan Discovery Kits to groups who have not completed the on-site program.

Is bus parking available?

Bus parking can be arranged but is dependent upon availability. One weeks advanced notice is required to make arrangements with Parking Services. Contact Isaac Yeung directly to arrange bus parking by email: Isaac.yeung@ualberta.ca or by phone: 780.492.1717.

If my parent-volunteer drives to campus, where can he or she park?

Parking on campus is limited, and public lots are indicated on the University of Alberta's North Campus map. Anyone driving a personal vehicle to attend a school program is responsible for paying his or her parking charges.

What do students need to bring to campus?

Students are asked to each bring a pencil (pens are not allowed in the collection areas). Students should wear suitable clothing and footwear for walking across campus. Students should not bring valuables or electronic devices such as iPods and cell phones.

What happens when we arrive on campus?

An educational interpreter will meet your bus at the designated meeting area. Trained interpretive staff facilitate all programs.

Can we eat lunch on campus?

During term, lunch facilities are very busy. Though seating cannot be guaranteed, teachers may choose to remain on campus for lunch. Bag lunches are recommended and public eating areas can be recommended.

Can I keep the Discovery Kit longer than my loan period?

Please direct all requests for extensions to Stephanie Nemcsok, Museum Education Coordinator at 780.492.9700. If the kit is not required for another group, we will try to accommodate your request.

The Muse Programs do not meet my needs. What else do you offer?

We will do our best to accommodate your group’s needs. If you are looking for a school group program, please contact Stephanie Nemcsok, Museum Education Coordinator at 780.492.9700.
