Charles Stankievech: The Soniferous Aether of The Land Beyond The Land Beyond
The University of Alberta Museums presents this 10-minute, 35-mm film installation, created during a residency at Canadian Forces Station Alert, a military spy outpost and the northernmost settlement on Earth. Stankievech’s documents the station—built in 1956 to intercept Russian radio communications and aid Cold War efforts—and the surrounding landscape shrouded by the intense darkness of a polar winter. Part of an ongoing series of fieldworks by Stankievech documenting remote architecture, military infrastructure, and the embedded landscape, the film conjures a post-apocalyptic scene where outer space meets Earth.
