John E. Vollmer is an internationally recognized curator and scholar in the fields of Asian art, textiles and dress. Vollmer has held curatorial appointments at the Royal Ontario Museum and at the Glenbow Museum in Calgary. He served as director at the Kent State University Museum and was the founding executive director of the Toronto Design Exchange.
Since 1991, Vollmer Cultural Consultants Inc. located in New York City, has assisted not-for-profit, public and private sector clients with projects including collections management issues, research, publishing, strategic planning and program development.
Vollmer has been involved with the Mactaggart Art Collection of Chinese robes and textiles since the mid-1970s. In 2007 he served as curator for the exhibition Dressed to Rule: 18th Century Court Attire in the Mactaggart Art Collection, the first public exhibition of the collection after the donation to the University of Alberta. Together with Jacqueline Simcox he is the author of Emblems of Empire: Selections from the Mactaggart Art Collection published in 2009.
